Description

The spring sophomore studio course will build on topics covered in the first semester by advancing material studies, developing processes, continuing to master techniques, and refining conceptual investigation. Students are guided through the rigorous process of developing a complex studio practice that addresses personal interest as well as collective concerns, historical precedents, and speculative futures. Reading and writing assignments will encourage critical thinking as each student works toward drafting an artist statement and prepares for an end-of-semester review. Students will be given the whole semester to work on one self-directed project, while also working on a variety of smaller projects to exercise a fluency within techniques. Students are encouraged to introduce new materials and processes and to explore the expanded sculptural field, which may involve incorporating collaboration, video, sound, performance, and other modes of working to shape their practice.
