Description

This course will examine the visual relationships between time, media and artistic practice, and will map elements of the historical construction of the time-image in both seminar and studio contexts. As many of the relationships between still and time-based media are infinitely expandable, students will respond to readings, screenings and rigorous in-class collaborations and independent projects in the investigation of that idea.

Screenings (including artists such as Godard, Frampton and Viola) and readings (including De Certeau, Foster and Deleuze) will initiate seminar discussions and studio projects. These projects will often be developed outside of class time and presented in group critiques. The central goal of the course is to develop an awareness of how images, objects and theoretical frameworks contribute to our perception of time, and how our work might provide a constructive response.
