Description

[G/C; Asian Studies minor] In this course, students will read and study major authors and literary trends in Japanese literature, including short stories, novels, and essays. Each text will be discussed in the context of historical and political events, social developments, and cultural movements. The class will examine themes related to the tensions between tradition and modernity, the impact of Westernization on concepts of the self, gender, and class, the effects of World War II and its aftermath, as well as postmodern sensibilities and aesthetics.
