Description
This course is a study of the history of narrative technique from Chekhov and Henry James to Flannery OβConnor and Miranda July. Students will read a wide range of authors, both classic and contemporary. Students will learn to identify and critically assess, both in discussion and in writing, elements of the narrative, including plot, characterization, theme, point of view, voice, and style. We will, as Lawrence Weschler said, βWrite as if reading mattered, and read as if writing mattered.β
