Description

[Sound minor] This course provides a foundational investigation into the historical lineages, techniques and philosophies of the moving image and its role as an instrument of expression, up to its contemporary cinematic audiovisual successors. Explorations of the construction of audiovisual works and their analog precursors will be examined through lectures, screenings, workshop demonstrations, and production assignments. The class will discuss the history of moving image by thoroughly studying and understanding essential works by artists. The class will also be a space to critically investigate the limitations and subjectivity of the existing history and imagine alternative modes of reading the history of art and cinema. The curriculum incorporates the fundamental skills needed for audiovisual work within pre-production, production, and post-production procedures (cinematography, sound recording, video editing, and more).
