Description

This course introduces students to various approaches in constructed textiles using weaving. In weaving, all elements are interrelated and function interdependently to create a unified whole. This semester we will examine each of these elements, from the choice of fiber and yarn to the impact of structure and finishing in a logical progression and use the process of weaving as a vehicle in developing a problem-solving attitude. We will first closely examine the plant and animal fibers that have traditionally been used in the fabrication of textiles. We will study their molecular arrangement, chemical composition, and physical structure to make educated choices. The fundamental processes of felting, spinning and knitting are covered to give students opportunities to become familiar with the basic characteristics of the materials and elements used in weaving.
