Description

This course will introduce and explore a range of mold making processes with the aid of digital fabrication. Students will develop foundational skills in mold-making and in casting clay, slip, plaster, soap, and silicone. In tandem, students will be introduced to Rhino3D and CNC Milling, two tools that open digital design and creation. Much of the prototyping and direct mold fabrication will be conducted with the CNC, culminating in the milling of plaster directly to create mold parts. There are many reasons to utilize mold-making, from the flexibility of components that can be infinitely repeated and combined, to expanding upon materiality, to simply a love of the process. Modularity, cohesive sets, product-focused designs, and creating a greater wholeβ€”mold-making and the multiple allow for it all. The course is open to students of all knowledge levels and experience in ceramics and emerging technologies.
