Description

[Seminar; G/C; Asian Studies minor] This course will examine the intersections between European-American and East Asian art. Focusing our study between 1500 and the present day, we will explore how the cultures stimulated each other, and how artists responded to perceived conflicts and cultural differences. Some questions we will address include: How do we define imitation or inspiration in the historic context? How do tradition and modernity interact in a global world? Does artistic imitation lead to cultural understanding or stereotyping? Since this is an art history seminar, class discussions are emphasized and written work, including a research paper, will be required.
