[Seminar; Ancient/Medieval] Illustrations have been a critical part of the science and practice of archaeology since the inception of the field in the 18th century. Not only do they document essential information about archaeological sites and artifacts, but they also reflect the ideas, styles, and values of the periods in which they were created. In this course we will explore the history of archaeological drawings and artists’ sketchbooks of archaeological sites in the ancient Mediterranean to study the history and development of technical illustrations. We will examine the art and history of a wide variety of archaeological sites, as well as the artists who visited those sites in the early modern period. This will allow us to take an in-depth look at the drawings these artists produced and consider the important role of illustrations in the practice of archaeology and dissemination of knowledge.
