Description

[Modern or Contemporary] This course will explore the ways in which fashion and art have pushed the boundaries of the clothed body in the atelier, on the runway, and in prêt-à-porter. The course will move chronologically through the 20th and early 21st centuries, discussing the ways in which pivotal art movements have paralleled changes in fashion, and vice versa. Contextualization of new materials, processes, and techniques within greater issues such as war, globalization, economics, and gender identity/fluidity will be addressed in both lectures and through primary source texts. Students will have the opportunity to do further research on a designer, movement, style, or thematic issue of their choosing, resulting in a substantive research paper.
