Description

[G/C; Medieval; Asian Studies minor] This course will examine Buddhism through the visual arts of China, Japan, and Korea. We will explore temples, cave sites, painted scrolls, spiritual sculptures, and other artistic media traditions from these regions and consider these works using visual, historical, political, and social perspectives. Through museum visits and in-class discussions, students will analyze artworks by means of regional and historical contexts, but also consider how Buddhist-related material functions within museums and local collections today.
