Description

[G/C; Ancient/Medieval] This course focuses on the art and architecture of the Maya. The Maya thrived in Mesoamerica (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize) as powerful city-states ruled by kings for 1300 years. The visual world of the Maya includes ruins of vast cities with temple-pyramids, large monuments and exquisite figurines, wall paintings, painted pottery, and even rare late manuscripts. The deciphered glyph system of writing used by the Maya reveals many insights into this ancient culture. We will explore many of the latest discoveries of Maya sites that continue to be made using advanced technologies, including LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and satellite images.
