Description

[Ancient/Medieval] We explore how new rulers--both men and women--establish and solidify their authority by the commission of great--and often radical--art and architecture. We also see how later generations look back on these works as models--or defile them. We begin with Queen Hatshepsut's quest for legitimacy and Akhenaten's and Nefertiti's ill-fated and radical rule. After exploring the propaganda of the great age of Athens and the imagery of Alexander the Great, we look to Augustus, the Empress Livia, and Rome's great enemy, Cleopatra.
