Description

[G/C; Asian Studies minor] In this course we will examine the art of China beginning with its emergence in the Neolithic period through modern times. We will discuss the great burial finds of such periods as the Shang, Qin and Han Dynasties, see the development of art related to Buddhism and Daoism (Taoism) and explore the variety of paintings and ceramics produced in the Song Dynasty and the periods that follow. Paintings, sculptures, bronzes, ceramics, jades and lacquer ware will be examined both chronologically and thematically. We will take into consideration the various social, religious and cultural contexts under which the art was produced.
