Description
[Renaissance/Baroque] This course will examine the art produced in northern Europe (England, France and the Netherlands) during the 17th century. Our primary focus will be on some major artists such as Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck and Vermeer, but we will also explore important developments in still life painting, landscapes, portraiture and scenes of everyday life. We will consider the historical, cultural, religious and economic factors that influenced the art, as well as discuss how some specific interests in optics and cartography may be manifested in some artistsβ works.
